In an editorial penned by someone with far greater talents than myself, I recently read that it’s a meaningful moment when you go from capturing what you see to actively manipulating a scene for a better shot. He was referring to models and lighting equipment and more “staged shots.” Considering I had just purchased my first light kit, I was pretty puffed up after reading that.
The first night I had to play with my lights, I invited someone over with the two absolute best qualities you can ask for when you are making your first foray into the world of lit subjects: someone who was not only wildly photogenic but also patient enough to quietly sit here or there or however directed. It also helps that I knew my subject very well and knew exactly how I wanted to approach this session.
Not bad for my first try.
